The Need for Volunteers

August 22nd, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Did you know that only 27% of the American people had a volunteer experience last year and one in three volunteers don’t return the following year. Volunteering is one of the most rewarding experiences an individual can have. The BBB of St. Louis states that 62% of people want to work for a company that give them a chance to use their skills to help a non-profit organization. The main focus of today’s volunteers is the environment, poverty, and community issues.

Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County faces many obstacles in providing affordable housing to deserving families. Approximately 600 people were deemed homeless in January of 2008, with another 730 living in public housing and 200 on the waiting list. The demand is high, while the Housing Authority lists 1,110 households in St. Charles County living at  or below the poverty level.

What can you do to help? Habitat is currently building 7 homes in Ashland Meadows in Wentzville, MO. Volunteers are needed to complete construction before the year’s end. Work is currently underway Wednesday - Saturday. Individuals are welcome on-site any day, but groups can schedule a day with Kelly Brooks at (636)978-5712. Contact the Habitat office for more information or directions to the site.

Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County is looking for a few good folks who have a desire to help their community and the environment while getting in touch with their destructive side. Or perhaps de-constructive side. No firm date set yet, but within the next 6-8 weeks ReStore, the retail store for Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County will be helping in the deconstruction of a 7 year old house. The pieces of the house that get removed will in turn be sold at the ReStore instead of sitting in a land fill somewhere. Proceeds from these sales will go straight into the building of more housing for deserving families in St. Charles County. So come out and help the environment, help some deserving families and go ‘Office Space’ on a house without fretting over pre-arraignment hearings. For more information, or to volunteer please contact Andrea Hughes at (636) 978-5712.
